In autumn 2025, I launched my SUP into the calm, clear Setouchi Sea. The Jackson Sagoshitune responded perfectly to high‑speed retrieves, triggering explosive strikes from Spanish mackerel.
Every fish was over 70 cm — six in total.
But catching too many Spanish mackerel brings chaos: slippery decks, slippery paddles, fish that don’t fit in the cooler, and the constant danger of cuts on a narrow SUP platform.
Still, Spanish mackerel surface frenzies are unmatched. Their speed, sharp movements, and violent surface attacks create a thrill completely different from yellowtail.
It was one of the most memorable SUP fishing days of the year.
